When **not** to use Claude Code
Know when to use Claude Code, Claude.ai, or your own brain
⏱ Est. ~5 min
01 · Read
Claude Code is incredibly powerful, but it's not the right tool for everything. Knowing when not to use it is just as important as knowing how to use it well.
There are three modes of work, and the best engineers switch between them smoothly: - Claude Code — build, edit, and debug project code - Claude.ai (chat interface) — brainstorming, planning, writing docs, asking conceptual questions - Your own learning (docs, tutorials, Google) — deep understanding of concepts you'll use over and over
Key points
- Don't use it as a crutch — if you don't understand the code, ask Claude to explain before moving on
- Don't accept blindly — always review changes with git diff
- Don't skip learning — use Claude to learn faster, not to avoid learning entirely
- Use Claude.ai for: brainstorming ideas, planning features, writing non-code content
- Use docs and Google when: you need deep understanding of a concept you'll use again and again
02 · Quiz
When should you use Claude.ai (chat interface) instead of Claude Code?
- Editing files in your project
- Running terminal commands
- Brainstorming ideas for a new feature
- Installing packages
03 · Read
Here's a useful mental model for thinking about your relationship with Claude Code:
💡 Picture thisClaude is a power tool. A nail gun is faster than a hammer, but you still need to know where the nails go. If you don't understand the blueprints, a faster tool just lets you make mistakes faster. Learn the blueprints (concepts) first, then use the power tool (Claude Code) to build efficiently.
04 · Fill in the blank
Claude Code is for editing _____, Claude.ai is for general questions.
05 · Read
The engineers who get the most out of AI tools are the ones who stay curious. They don't just accept Claude's output — they ask why it made those choices. They read the code. They learn the patterns. Over time, they use Claude less for simple things and more for complex, creative work.
06 · Quiz
You want to plan features for a new project — no code yet. Which tool is best?
- Claude Code — it can plan and build at the same time
- Google Docs — AI tools can't help with planning
- Just start coding and figure it out as you go
- Claude.ai — it's great for brainstorming and planning without needing file access
07 · Fill in the blank
The three modes of work are: Claude Code to build, Claude.ai to think, and your own _____ for deep understanding.
